AeroDiscover’s SEND Outreach Success: Inspiring Future Aviators at Willoughby Academy

AeroDiscover, a flagship project of LEBC and funded by the CAA & DfT, recently partnered with the BMFA Outreach Team to deliver an unforgettable day of aviation-themed STEM activities at Willoughby Academy in Bourne, South Lincolnshire. Willoughby Academy is a specialist school for pupils aged 2 to 19 years, supporting those with a diverse range of complex Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The event was carefully designed to inspire SEND pupils to explore careers in aviation—an area where their potential is often overlooked. AeroDiscover aims to break down barriers, spark curiosity, and demonstrate that everyone has a place in the aviation sector with the right encouragement and opportunity.

After a short presentation on how aeroplanes fly, alongside videos showcasing the excitement of model flying, pupils were divided into groups to take part in a range of fun, educational activities:

• Building, trimming, and flying BMFA Aerojets
• Creating and flying “Hoop Gliders”
• Launching stomp rockets
• Flying a Radio-Controlled Aeroplane Simulator

The event was brought to life by the BMFA Outreach Team, a group of passionate individuals—many of whom are volunteers—who dedicate their time to sharing their love of model flying and aviation. With their energy, enthusiasm, and expertise, they created an atmosphere that was both caring and inspiring, connecting beautifully with the incredible Willoughby students to make the day truly special.

Reports from the school describe how the pupils went home still animated with excitement, eager to share what they had learned and experienced. Teachers have also noted that conversations about the day’s activities have continued long after the event, reinforcing the impact of this inspiring experience.
